Star Trek Costumes - A Great Costume Party Theme

Posted by David Lawson on August 31st, 2009

If your child’s been invited to a costume party with a Star Trek theme, there are interesting ideas and even great ready-made Star Trek costumes you may find through a quick on line browse.

If you have a tall son, he can dress up in a Mr. Spock shirt with embroidered insignia. The proper eye make-up and wig, with special accessories like Spock’s trademark ears and a pistol can be great finishing touches.

Involve your child’s friends with the idea to enhance the feeling of fun when they all don Star Fleet uniforms and act like crew members of the star ship Enterprise. Showing up together as the crew of ship from Star Trek will both surprise and delight the rest of the guests at the costume party.

Do-it-yourself Star Trek costumes for the rest of the kids may suffice, especially if you have an authentic one already at hand which you can easily copy.

You could use a single color V-neck long sleeve shirt, coupled with slim black trousers, as the basis for boys outfits. You will notice that the men on Star Trek almost always wear tight-fitting pants and long sleeve shirts for uniforms.

So as long as the long sleeve shirt is a single color, it should look just like a Star Fleet uniform with a simple communicator badge on the chest.

On the girls’ side of things, try a V-neck one color mini-dress and a black mock turtle-neck underneath. Then you can just sew on a simple patch of fabric in the shape and color of a Star Trek costume communicator badge. Complete the outfit using some black boots and black stockings.

If you don’t exactly have the kind of time to put together such homemade creations, then browse the newest selections of Star Trek costumes on Halloween costume stores. Every year manufacturers put create new product lines to meet such high customer demand.

Your kids will surely have a blast because they will be wearing one-of-a-kind togs that showcase not just quality, but comfort and ease.

GI Joe Birthday Supplies You Can’t Do Without

Posted by Patti Lauwers on August 31st, 2009

GI Joe has been part of the toy and comic book scene for generations now. Now, he’s been re-invented. Joe and crew are part of an international force fighting evil. You can battle evil your own way with a whole set of GI Joe party items.

Start your mission planning off the right way with a GI Joe Deluxe Party Pack. The crew has to eat, right? So, rest assured knowing you’ve got all the plates, cups, napkins, and more that you’ll need for the whole team to chow down. And, be happy that you can decorate your bivouac with crepe paper, balloons, a tablecover and centerpiece, and lots more. Now you’re set.

Be sure to supply every team member with a disguise for the ultra-secret meeting. That’s easy with a set of GI Joe Masks. The kit includes 4 white and 4 black ninja masks, so everyone can become the character he likes best. Just make sure they don’t sneak up on the refreshment table when you’re not looking.

Take time to plan those search-and-consume missions carefully, though. The GI Joe Watch is the perfect instrument for that purpose. Add a set of GI Joe Rubber Bracelets so you can clearly identify who is a member of the squad.

Naturally, the squad will need some weapons for self-protection. The GI Joe Ninja Stars are the ideal choice. Lethal to imaginary enemies only, of course, since they are made of safe plastic, and accurate, all the Joes will be well-equipped with this item.

Add a Snake Eyes Sword. It’s a must for slicing through a group of bad guys. Or for just looking cool, since the only thing this 31″ toy can really slice is air.

Good protection is the best defense for your stealth operatives. Make sure they’re covered with a pair of GI Joe Child Gloves. They’re black and feature the official logo, making them the perfect accessory. GI Joe Duke Child Boot Covers are another great idea for those night missions. The gray faux-metal accents along a polyester and polyurethane boot cover will do the trick.

Let your squadron leader look his best with a GI Joe Duke Classic Muscle Child Costume. This black jumpsuit with a stuffed armor torso and silver accents is really slick. When he slips on the mask he’ll be ready for anything. Anything, such as eating cake or opening presents. Or, just a game of hide and seek in the back yard.

Of course, it’s all for nothing if he doesn’t have a pair of GI Joe Duke Missile Launcher Arms. The Cobras will fall like bowling pins when your Joe gets started with this baby. The plastic toy missiles really go, so stand back when he aims at the tree in the yard. Not a bad idea to have a set of 4 GI Joe Disc Launchers, though, just in case. Everybody needs a backup system, right?

Well, your system is unbeatable if you select the cool GI Joe party goods to make your next mission a huge success. Be sure to check the arrivals at the door, in case some Cobras try to crash the meeting!

Easy Homemade Halloween Costumes

Posted by Lynne Hughes on August 31st, 2009

Since Halloween is just right around the corner, for some, its time to start thinking about Halloween costumes. Most of us want something that is quick and easy and don’t have a lot of time to fuss over the costume. We normally need to dress ourselves and our children if we partake in Halloween activities. Below are a few simple ideas for costumes that only require every day household items.

American Tourist - Men should wear a brightly colored Hawaiian type of shirt with shorts. A straw hat, if you have one will go nicely. Add your camera around your neck and stick a map hanging out of your pocket. You can also use tourist attraction brochures if you have those too. For women, wear a brightly colored dress, with big bold flowers on it, if you have it. Grab a straw hat and your camera. Don’t forget your sunglasses!

A Hobo - wear really bummy clothes and dirty up your face with either ashes or makeup. This costume can also be used as a Chimney sweeper, just add a broom.

The Coat of Arms - Cut the sleeves off old jackets or shirts that are no good any longer. Stuff the arms with either newspaper or plastic grocery bags, whatever you have. Take the arms and safety pin them to your coat or jacket.

A Wind-blown man (or woman) - spray or gel you hair back just like it would look if it were windblown. Take a couple pieces of newspaper and affix it to your leg with tape, staple or safety pin. It will depend on what you are wearing on your legs. Make it look like the newspaper has blown up on your leg. Take a wire hanger and make a wire headpiece to go around your head, with a wire that protrudes out. You will affix a hat to this part so it will look like the hat is blowing off your head.

Grapes Bunch - You can use either purple or green balloons. Blow up the balloons and safety pin them to your shirt. If you have the same colored shirt as balloons, great, if not, no problem. From green construction paper, cut out grape leaves and tape them around your neck. Make a stem with brown construction paper and affix it to a hat. If you have tights to match, great! Otherwise, jeans work well too.

Basket of Laundry - have an old laundry basket lying around? Cut a hole in the bottom so that you can step through, but make sure the basket will sit on your hips once you pull it over your head. Wear sweat pants and a sweatshirt. Put laundry in the laundry basket once you have it on and attach with safety pins dryer sheets to your sweatshirt. Put some in the laundry basket too.

Even if you do have time to shop for your Halloween costume this year, you might want to consider one of these homemade Halloween costume suggestions. Either way, have a safe and fun Halloween!

While surfing for an interesting and uniqueHolloween costume for this year, you can find many different types, both to purchase online and homemade. Find just about anything from pirate costumes to princess costumes and everything in between.

Tips About Baby Shower Favors

Posted by Guest on August 30th, 2009

baby shower decoration

As with the basic baby shower decoration and themes, baby shower favors are only limited by the bounds of your creativity. Baby shower favors serve as a lasting memory to the guests and are a simple way for the hostess to thank everyone for participating. Baby shower favors can be anything from personalized trinkets to gift certificates at a local shop. What you choose is up to you and your budget.

Baby shower favors are small, thoughtful gifts offered to the guests as a thank you for attending the shower. If baby shower games are planned, baby shower favors are usually offered as game prizes that some guests might win. Sometimes these baby shower favors integrate with the theme, but they don’t have to. It all depends upon the preference of the hostess.

The hostess foots the bill for the baby shower, and budget may be a factor when choosing baby shower favors. Consider sharing the expense with others and have a group act as hostess. Determine what items need to be bought and what baby shower games need to be planned.  Assign tasks and delegate. One person could be responsible for shopping for baby shower favors and one person for tracking down decorations, and so on. Make double use of the baby shower favors. Use them as part of the baby shower decorations.

Baby bottles filled with assorted candies make great balloon weights. They can also double as a baby shower centerpiece for tables. When the party is over, the guests can empty the contents into a take-home bag and give the bottles to the mommy-to-be. If the mother plans to breastfeed, choose another type of weight, such as small packs of diapers. If you prefer, you can use these decorations for smaller tables and choose a larger baby shower centerpiece for the main table.

There are so many choices for baby shower favors that it is best to categorize them into four main groups: Edible, decorative, personalized, and pampering. A few examples of edible baby shower favors include baby socks filled with candies, baby pacifier lollipops, or baby feet gummies. Personalized baby shower favors are items you can engrave or that have photos of the guests, like small picture frames with a group shot. Decorative and pampering choices include scented votive candles, soaps or candles shaped like ducks, bunnies, baby booties, or baby bottles. Any of these items serve well as baby shower decorations.

If you do decide to use the favors as baby shower decorations, make sure that you don’t give them out until the end of the party - especially if one of the favors is the baby shower centerpiece! You can let people know they can choose their favors, you can gather all the favors together on a table, or you can hand them out individually. While baby shower favors are not a requirement, people do enjoy leaving a party with a little something to remind them of the good time they just had.

Baby Won’t Sleep? Try a Baby Hammock!

Posted by Guest on August 30th, 2009

Often the only way to calm a fussy newborn is by rocking him. But it can be difficult to cuddle your little one in your arms for hours at a time to give him what he wants. Moreover nearly all of the baby products that make an automated rocking action do not do so in the ordinary way that your infant prefers. Luckily, there’s a method to assist your infant to get to sleep and permit you to get some rest too. It’s called a baby hammock, a novel but not entirely modern method to help your infant get the sleep he needs.

A baby hammock is an utterly natural method to help a crying baby relax and doze off. It has been employed in most Asian nations for years as the ideal method to help a little one calm down and get drowsy. In recent years, western society has also become aware of this natural means of soothing a baby.

When you consider it, the idea of a baby hammock is completely logical. It mimics the way that a parent rocks a child to sleep. It likewise entirely captures the way a child feels when you sit with him in your arms in a rocking chair. The rocking motion helps to calm a baby who has problems falling into a peaceful sleep.

It’s a entirely secure cradle for a baby as it has been made so that there is no way for it to tip over. There are no open sides so your little one cannot roll off, and it perfectly mimics an embrace. Your little one will feel like he is being held in your arms and is consequently perfectly happy. It’s the perfect cozy little nest for your baby in this immense world.

There could not be a more comfy bed for your child than a hammock. The explanation for why it’s so cozy for your baby is that it is exactly the same arrangement he was in throughout the final months of your pregnancy. Reconstructing the security and warmth of the womb will go far towards relaxing your newborn.

When your baby lies in the hammock it is hard for him to turn over onto his stomach. This means your baby won’t be exposed to the threat of sudden infant death that can happen in a traditional bed or cradle.

How old your baby is does not make a difference. A baby hammock can be used from the beginning until your baby is one year old. Every new parent could use some good baby advice, and this might be just what you need to help yourself and your baby get a good night’s sleep.

Posted by Guest on August 30th, 2009

For parents wanting their child to put his or her best foot forward, the launch of the Australian and New Zealand website for iconic children’s footwear brand, See Kai Run, is a giant step in the right direction.
Until now, most Australians had to be content to covet See Kai Runs from a distance on the pages of celebrity magazines where famous offspring of mega stars such as Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner and Tobey MdGuire were photographed wearing their hip, happening shoes.  Now the brand has launched its own Australian and New Zealand website, tailored especially to the southern hemisphere seasons.
Where did this coveted footwear brand originate ?  As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.Cause Haun, a West Seattle mother, searched high and low for children’s shoes that was fashionable and functional. All she wanted was comfortable, stylish shoes with soft soles that allowed her own child to explore in comfort.
When she was in China on trip, Cause was inspired by some shoes she saw there, so she brought a few pairs back to the US and they sold in a flash.  In 2004, she started the company, named after her own son, Kai, and news of the groundbreaking kids’ shoes spread like wildfire through the virtual chatboards across America. The business took off, growing by over 400% in the first 12 months and it now has three shoe collections for kids from 0 - 11 years - the ‘Smaller range’, ‘See Kai Run’ and the ‘Eleven Collection’ for kids from 8 - 11 years old.

Fun, unique detailing and a modern take on classic designs is how See Kai Run’s kids’ shoes could be described.Even the chubbiest little feet will be comfortable in the hand-crafted sheepskin leather shoes, which are soft as butter with flexible rubber soles, Velcro closers and soft, supportive collars.
Between 15 and 20 new designs are released each year, with the new Australian website carrying the new releases to coincide with southern hemisphere seasons.Individual, sophisticated, fun and funky, the footwear from See Kai run ticks the fashion box as well as the function box.  The footwear carries the prestigious seal of approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association, meeting stringent health and functionality standards.

Six Rules for Giving Presents to New Mothers

Posted by Terry Stanfield on August 29th, 2009

Buying gifts for new mothers is very difficult as most people don’t know what the new mother needs - unless you have been a new mother yourself. Buying gifts for mom is hard and buying gifts for a new mother is doubly difficult. Remember, the new mom will probably receive many gifts from many people therefore extra though needs to be given prior to purchasing a gift.

You need to ensure that the gift you give stands out from all the others. It’s important to put yourself in the new mother’s shoes and then start thinking from there. Here are six points - or rules that, if followed, will do just that.

Rule number 1: The gift you give the new mother has to be useful to her. There is no point in giving her a gift that is very expensive but does not make her life easier - remember, she is a new mother so a diamond ring will not fit the occasion.

Rule number 2: The gift will multiply in sentimental value if it’s for the baby. Gifts for mom will certainly be liked but a gift for the baby will be adored.

Rule number 3: If you have purchased a cute little gift for the baby then it would be a good idea if you could also add a special gift for mom as well - just so that she knows you have though of her and her baby both.

Rule number 4: Women do love jewelry and it’s not a bad idea to tie in the mother’s jewelry with the new born. An example could be a locket with the baby’s picture inside.

Rule number 5: A mother’s gift does not necessarily have to be expensive - it could simply be something that would congratulate her into motherhood. The new mother is already delighted to be a mom and all you can do is to cheer her for that.

Rule number 6: Each gift sends a different non-verbal message to the receiver. Use your imagination, ask around and make it special and personal - customize the gift to the receiver as much as possible.

As already mentioned, a gift sends a message to the receiver and sometimes a gift could be so metaphorical that only the receiver and giver would know what that message is. Remember, good gifts for mom (and her child) are not one that makes her go WOW when received - in fact its one that makes her go WOW every day.

The Special Place that Baseball Holds in My Heart

Posted by Lance Baker on August 29th, 2009

I grew up in the heart of Texas, and how enjoyable it was. I loved Abilene and had a great childhood there as far as the settings go. In the household though, things were very different.

During my early youth, I grew up with both of my parents around. Both of them devout Christians, they always took me to church, bible school, where I would learn all of the different stories, and other places. It was great.

Everything changed when I was about 5 years old. When my mother switched jobs, it forced her out of the house every Sunday. Then my father decided to keep busy around the home while she was gone. We all stopped going to church, and there was an obvious rift between both of my parents. This led to a divorce three years layer.

I asked my mother if her and my father would be alright, and she always told me yes. She wanted to hide the fact that they were going to eventually be divorced. I wasn’t old enough to deal with a divorce so she tried to hide it for two more years. My dad came around the house between the ages of 8-10 just so that they didn’t have to tell me they were divorced. When my father was here they never talked and if they did they were arguing.

There was something good that came out of this, though. Between the ages of 8-10 I spent a lot of time in my room. I wasn’t fortunate enough to have a television, but I did figure out how to use my radio. I turned the music up loud enough so that I wouldn’t have to hear my parents argue. It was one day, though, that I was switching through the channels and I heard a different voice. I heard “it’s three balls and one strike”. Three balls? One strike? Sure, I remember playing with balls in my backyard as a kid. My dad and I use to play catch with balls, sometimes even a baseball as I got earlier. But that’s all. So what were balls and strikes? What did they signify?

Every day, I’d listen to the Rangers on the radio during baseball season. I came to understand what a strikeout was, what a home run was, and what everything else meant. I’d even hear my father discussing the team with his friends, and Nolan Ryan became my favorite player on the team (he was my father’s favorite too).

It became a ritual. My dad would come over, I didn’t want to hear my parents arguing, so I’d stay in my room with the radio loud, listening to the Rangers. My mom eventually bought me a hat, and I’d wear it all over the place. The joy I’d feel when the team won a game!

The Texas Rangers were truly my escape during my childhood. They’d take me away from all of my pains, and give me an outlet that made me happy. To this day, I love the team and experience the same joy with each win that I did back then.
