Stress-Relief for the Nanny-Set

without comments

By Michael Gerard

A new 20 page ‘board stock’ book introduces the idea of a nanny to young children.

Hilary Lockhart’s “My Nanny and I” helps transition young children into their new child care setting. In fewer than 200 words the author describes a day with the nanny that is filled with activities, fun and learning. Going to the park, playing dress-up and making arts & crafts are all part of this wonderful book. Fear of being left with a ’stranger’ is quickly forgotten as children are introduced to their new care provider.

My nanny is coming
We’re going to have fun
We’ll play in if it rains
Or play out if there’s sun

She will teach me to count
Play puzzles and blocks
To help me get dressed
And put on my socks

Featuring 3 different nannies and full of life illustrations by Edison Gonclaves, this high-quality ‘lift-the-flap’ book features a photo frame where you can personalize your copy by inserting a picture of nanny and child.

Most importantly, children come to understand that at the end of the day a parent will return home.

My Nanny and I will help ease the transition of bringing a nanny into the family, break the ice for the child and their new caregiver and help create a loving bond between nanny and child.

This book is so adorable, so cute and so absolutely necessary.

With text and beautifully effective illustrations describing everyday activities, My Nanny and I teaches very young children in a reassuring way that the nanny will be there while parents are away, and that mom or dad will be home at the end of the day. The book, entirely self published and printed by the author with resources from around the globe and is of excellent quality (notwithstanding some punctuation choices that bear the mark of rushed editing).

It’s a simple idea that as adults we take for granted.

No less frightening than being left at school, the idea of being left at home with a stranger can be terrifying for a child. My Nanny and I helps teach toddlers what to expect while in the care of a nanny.

The deceptively simple, rhyming text and first rate illustrations make this a great story-book. When introduced as part of your child’s 'read-aloud' bedtime repertoire it will help prepare him or her for life with nanny.

Think of My Nanny and I as “Stress-Relief for the Nanny-Set”.

Step Parents Frequently Find It Difficult To Share Authority

without comments

Step parenting usually brings its own special difficulties as the new step parent finds himself or herself caught in the middle between the children and the biological parent. Exactly how much of a problem you may encounter depends upon a whole variety of factors, not the least of which will be the degree of co-operation you get from the biological parent and the ages of the children involved.

The best parenting advice and the secret to successful step parenting lies first in clearly establishing your role in the eyes of the biological parent as you will certainly have an uphill struggle if the two of you are not fully in agreement from the beginning. With any changes in a relationship however you must also understand that adjustment takes time and you will have to adopt a ’step by step’ approach. Any attempt to rush things, or to force the situation, will definitely result in frustration and possibly confrontation. The biological parent may feel threatened by the requirement to share parenting and will need time to adjust and to gain confidence and trust in you as a parent to her or his children.

Next, you will clearly need to establish your role with the children who, unless they are very young, will normally resent the intrusion of an ‘outsider’. You will need to take things gradually and understand that the children will need time to adjust to the situation before they will accept you in the role of a parent. Again, you will have to have the help of the biological parent in building your relationship with the children.

Any successful move into step parenting must start with a clear and frank discussion with the biological parent, during which both parties need to talk freely and honestly about how they see their role, and that of the other party, and you both need to come to a clear agreement about just how you ought to share parenting responsibilitites. This discussion should also set clear boundaries but must be flexible enough to allow for modification, especially in the all important initial weeks and months after the establishment of this new relationship.

This first conversation will not of course be the end of the matter and several such discussions will have to take place before a really meaningful and lasting change in parenting responsibilities can take place.

Once you are in agreement the next step in the process is to bring the children on board and this must initially be led by the biological parent. At an appropriate time everybody should sit down together and the biological parent has got to lead off a discussion during which the plan which you have agreed can be given to the children and discussed with them.

It is important to emphasize here that this needs to be a true discussion and not simply a case of the parents ‘laying down the law’ to the children. It is critically important that the children have a say in to the conversation and that their thoughts and views on what has been agreed be heard. Children, just like adults, need to be allowed to have a feeling of control over their own lives and have to be comfortable with the situation in which they now find themselves. This is not to say that the children must be given control of the situation, which has to remain firmly in the parents’ hands as they are the the final decision makers, however, every effort has to be made to ensure that they comprehend the situation and are as happy with it as is they can be.

The simple fact that the children can see that their parents have obviously considered the position very carefully, and are in agreement about it, will do a great deal to stop the children from playing one parent off against the other and the fact that they are included in the process will also assist a great deal in bringing them on board.

Arriving on the scene as a step parent can be hard for not only the step parent but for the biological parent and the children and all parties will need to work together slowly and take their time to build an environment in which everybody is able to live happily together. Handled with care step parenting is not as difficult as many people think.

What to look for in a Good Jogging Stroller

without comments

If you lead an active lifestyle and you want to include your new family additions in your outdoor activity then you need to consider getting yourself a good jogging stroller.

Choosing a jogging stroller can be like trying to decide on what car to buy. There are so many things to consider when making a decision. A good jogger can set you back anywhere from $79 to about $400. This is a lot of money but you get what you pay for.

There are several brands on the market requiring you do some research towards what you want in a jogger. Before you decide to buy its important to know what you will be using it for. If you are someone who just wants a jogger for the odd brisk walk in the park or as an every day stroller then you will find there are brands that will suit this kind of activity.

The most noticeable difference in a jogging stroller is its wheel size. If you are a casual user then a jogger with smaller wheels will suit you. Smaller wheels are better for smooth surfaces. Smaller wheels are also usually easier to turn. If you are an avid runner and want to use your jogger for regular runs then you would have to opt for one with bigger wheels.

Bigger Wheels are much better for negotiating rough terrain and other obstacle like curbs and steps. The bigger wheels will help you glide over all types of terrain giving a much smoother ride. Certain Joggers are fitted with Shocks and Suspensions and are recommended for off road use. Joggers will have a fixed nose wheel which makes it more stable when being pushed at high speeds. If you are using your jogger for running or just around the supermarket then opt for a jogger that has a swivel wheel which can be locked into place if you decide to go out for a run. Swivel wheels will allow much easier maneuverability in small spaces.

The most important aspect of choosing a Jogger is that it must be comfortable for your child. If you are going to go running then you need to make sure the ride is comfortable and smooth. Make sure your jogger had reclining seats. Your child may fall asleep while you are out running so it is important that they are in a comfortable lying position. Most Joggers will not have a fully reclining seat due to the nature of the design.

If you look after your Jogger then it will hold its resale value. You will get good money for your second hand jogger whne you come to sell it especially if you have looked after it. These are expensive items so many people will look to purchasing a used one.

Save Money at Summer Camp

without comments

Camp children learning through experience. Play gives children a wide range of skills and helps them develop physically, emotionally & intellectually. Kids learn by doing, living, and experiencing things for themselves. It’s one thing to watch life on a computer screen yet, quite another to experience real life.

The benefits of camp are worth every penny. Yet Private resident camps are expensive. When trying to determine how to save some money for summer camp, consider the following cost saving ideas.Camp Savings

Families that in the past have sent their children to private sleep away camps, especially on the east coast, are now looking for less expensive alternatives. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan all provide summer camp with similar activities and programs at a thirty percent savings.

For many you may need to change your private camps look to alternative programs that might be similar to what you have done in the past yet less expensive. This is just a matter of shopping on the internet for price. See Swift Nature Camp as a wonderful value camp.Adventure Camp

For other children the answer may be to leave the private summer camp programs altogether and choose a less expensive overnight camp program, such as a YMCA or a even a church program. These summer camps can save nearly 30% or more compared to the private camps.

In most local areas park districts offer some form of day summer camp. These are usually the most cost effective, however, day camps generally do not offer the same array of activities and benefits that an overnight summer camp provides.

Most importantly, most camps do have discounts and campership programs, yet rarely do these programs make camp free. Each individual camp determines how to run their own discounts, it’s important to ask the director how to take part in a campership program to help make camp affordable for you.

The ACA (American Camp Association) recommends: * Parents should ask whether the camp participates in income-eligible subsidy programs, for instance through Title XX. * A Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account allows parents to be reimbursed on a pre-tax basis for child care or adult dependent care expenses for qualified dependents that are necessary to allow parents to work, look for work, or to attend school full time. Visit the FSA Feds Web site for more information. * In certain circumstances, day care expenses, including transportation by a care provider, may be considered dependent care services and paid with pre-tax dollars. Visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for more information. * Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit: The IRS allows an income tax credit of up to $6,000 of dependent care expenses if you have two or more dependents (up to $3,000 for one dependent). The amount of the credit is based on your adjusted gross income and applies only to your federal taxes. This applies to qualifying day camp expenses as well. Visit the FSA Feds Web site for more information.

Remember, all camps are not created equal and cost is often reflected in quality of programs. It is imperative that you do your homework to ensure a quality experience for your child. One areas where camps cut costs is staffing. Some camps use volunteers while others have paid staff. Look at counselor-to-camper ratios to determine how many campers are sleeping in each cabin with how many children. What age are the counselors? If they are not over 18, parents should be wary.

Be sure to ask the director about the actual, true total cost of the camp. This should include not only tuition, but transportation, canteen and spending money, laundry, off-site trips, and uniforms (if required). Ask the director about how much of a deposit is required and if it is refundable. When must the camp fees be paid in full? Ask about what the policy is if the family’s plans change and they withdraw the child from the program before the start of camp. What if problems arise during camp and the child must come home?

Safety is the most important area of any Summer Camp. Regardless of cost, you want to ensure that your child will be safe and will return home at the end of the program. One way to make sure your selected camp is safe is to verify that the camp is an accredited member of the American Camp Association. The ACA ensures that over 300 standards are met in their accreditation process.

Lastly, It is important to try to remember what it is like being a kid. Summers are long! The experiences at summer camp create a lifetime of memories. Many adults fondly recall their camp days. Do what you must, but don’t let this summer pass your child by without a Overnight Summer Camp experience.

USA Summer Camps

without comments

Historically, summer camps have been an American institution since the early 1900’s. In the early days camp was all about getting youngsters out of city life and enjoying the clean cool air of the country while learning camping skills.

Today, summer camp has progressed from campfires to computer screens and from nature trails to rollerblade rinks. In fact, many of today’s camp programs take place in the heart of the city.

At camp, children are given the choice to take risks and try new things. This voluntary nature makes children more open to new experiences, with personal satisfaction as their motivation. Not only are there opportunities to try new things, but camp offers many areas for children to excel in.

At a good general interest camp, the non-athlete can shine at arts and crafts, woodworking, or dramatic programs, while the athlete can also find many outlets for their skills. Perhaps most importantly, the two campers learn to live together and become friends despite their varied interests. Environmental Camp

Camp offers children many opportunities to become competent. Practicing both new and old skills on a regular basis, it makes sense that there will be improvement. Novices have chances to learn, while those who are more experienced can improve. Learning new skills and improving on old ones builds self-esteem. Children become more independent and self-reliant at camp with their new skills.

Though years later, your child may not remember capture the flag games or the words to a camp song, the life lessons learned at camp will remain. At camp, a child learns how to take responsibility. The child who has never before made a bed, will learn how to smooth out sheets and blankets and tidy up a cubby. Though counselors will remind and encourage, campers quickly take responsibility for personal hygiene, and for more minor health issues, a camper learns to articulate what hurts and how to get help. All of this personal responsibility further fosters a sense of independence and self-esteem. Camp also improves a child’s social skills by making new friends and learning how to reach out to strangers.

At camp, children learn to get along with others, all while living together 24 hours a day, learning about courtesy, compromise, teamwork, and respect.

For campers from a foreign country Camps in USA provide a uniue opportunity for children to learn about America from local Children in a fun and safe environment. Not to mention the English language is spoken daily.

The Top 10 Things You Should Know About Background Checks

without comments

The Top 10
Things You Should Know About
Background Checks

1. What Exactly Is A Background Check?

A background check is usually an investigation of a person. A report is complied that will show the details that were found after one or more “searches” are conducted. When companies run background checks as part of their pre-employment screening process, the following are the more common search options from which the employer will choose:

    • Criminal Checks
    • Driving Record
    • Credit Report
    • Drug Screen
    • SSN Verification
    • Past Employment Verification
    • Education Verification
    • Reference Verification

2. Why Is A Background Check So Important?

It is the responsibility of a parent to be sure that they are making the right choice when selecting care givers for their children. It is critical that parents conduct an investigation to learn more about their employee candidate(s) prior to allowing them access to their children.

Even good people do not always reveal everything they should about their past; for example, failing to mention a bad driving record or past legal incident. And the fact is that bad people lie to gain access to children.

Only a competent background check and records search should provide you with peace of mind in knowing you have done everything you can to protect your family.

3. What Information Is Needed To Conduct An Investigation?

Different pieces of information are needed to run different reports. Typically you may need:

    • Name
    • Social Security Number
    • Date of Birth
    • Current Address
    • Driver’s License Number

4. Why Can’t I Just Run It Myself On The Internet?

The information that is publicly available on the Internet is typically very limited. While some courts do have online access, most have suppressed case information or identifiers that are used to determine if a name match is indeed your subject. Information like Credit Reports and Driving Records are very restricted.

Background Check Companies should have someone who can walk into all 3400+ US County Court Houses and have specialized online access to Motor Vehicle Departments and Credit Bureaus.

5. Do I Need To Have Anyone’s Permission or Authorization?

When an employer is running a background check in order to make a decision on hiring or retention it is required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to have written authorization from the subject of the search. The authorization form should be kept on file for five years.

6. How Far Back Does The Check Go?

It depends on what types of checks you run. Driving Records usually go back 3,5, or 7 years depending on the State. Credit Reports usually report 7 years. Criminal information can sometimes go back 10-15 years, but it is becoming more common to check for 7 years due to some restrictions imposed by State level Fair Credit Reporting Acts.

7. How Thorough Is A Background Check?

This can vary based on what types of checks are selected, what level of offenses your subject may have been involved with, how many times they have moved, and to a certain extent, how familiar they are with the criminal system. Background Checks can never be guaranteed to be 100% accurate based on how the system works. However, they go a long way in assisting the employer with providing a safer environment and doing their due diligence.

8. How Long Does It Take To Complete A Records Search?

Based on the selections made, some searches are instant. Others can take 2-4 business days. The search for criminal records in some outlying areas or when there is a potential record, can take up to a week or more.

9. What Are The Important Legal Issues?

There are a number of legislative acts that manage the relationship between the needs of the employer (security) and the rights of the individual (privacy). These include the Federal and State Fair Credit Reporting Acts, The Driver’s Protection Privacy Act, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and many other individual State laws and regulations related to both employment and childcare.

While Background Check companies cannot provide legal guidance, a good company will be knowledgeable in many of these areas and can share some ‘Best Practice’ procedures that their clients use. Such information, helpful as it may be, should not be viewed as, or substitute for, professional and competent legal counsel.

10. What If There Is A Mistake On A Background Check?

A Background Check company is known as a Credit Reporting Agency. It is required by the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act that any reports of inaccuracies by the subject of the search are documented and reinvestigated by the CRA.

Is Your Child Ready For Potty Training?

without comments

As most parents discover, thise is no shortage of “experts” eager to tell you when to start potty training your child. It’s easy to get caught up in the stories of babies being potty trained at eight months old and worry that your child is lagging behind.

The Only Rule

The first and only “rule” of potty training is RELAX. Trying to rush your child into toilet training will only upset and frustrate both of you. As a baby, your child took his first step and said his first word when he was ready; so it is with potty training. You can bet that in the “potty trained at eight months” legend, it was the parent who was trained, not the child. Anyone who sits a baby on a potty chair often and long enough, will eventually get lucky…but at what price?

The True Expert

The only one who can decide when your child is ready for potty training is your child. he will give you very clear signs that indicate he is ready to take this big step in his life. Some of the things you will notice are:

- Curiosity- he’ll follow you (and everyone else) into the bathroom, curious about what you’re doing. Answer his questions at his level using the terms you want his to learn and use.

- More Control- diaper stays clean for longer periods of time. You know you’ve hit pay dirt when he wakes up dry after naps.

- Wanting to be clean- as your child gets closer to being ready for potty training, he will begin to dislike the feel of a soiled diaper.

The Key to Potty Training Success

Patience and perseverance will win the day especially if you keep your expectations realistic. When you deal with accidents calmly and offer profuse praise for successes, your child will soon connect using the potty with praise and will want to do it more often. The potty training months can seem long, but keep in mind this is his last transition from baby to child. The time you spend sitting on the side of the tub encouraging him is precious and like all of babyhood, too quickly over.

Used Baby Furniture Cribs Safety

without comments

Before you commit yourself to buying a used crib for your baby you should consider some rather important points. Even thought it is essential that these points should not be overlooked if your baby is under a year old, they are also pertinent whatever your babies age.

The first part of a crib that you should thoroughly inspect is the mattress. It is very important that it fits the crib snugly and does not create any gaps.

A gap between the mattress and crib side is a dangerous place where your baby could get stuck. If the used crib you are buying does not come with a mattress then do not buy it until you know for sure that you can find a mattress that will fit in it properly.

If the crib does come with a mattress, make sure that it is not ill-fitting. And, also ensure that the bottom sheet you will be using fits snugly and is intended for use in cribs.

The next thing you should take note of is whether or not the crib is sturdy and well made. Check to see that there are no missing screws. Also, to prevent the possibility of your babies clothes becoming stuck on the corner posts it is recommended that they be no higher than 1/16th of an inch.

Next, take a very close look at each of the slats. Make sure that none are loose or missing. Obviously, none should be broken. The gaps between the slats should be no wider than a soda can in order to prevent any chance of the baby getting stuck in the gaps.

Some other things to consider are if the crib has cutouts or has any mesh siding. Headboard and footboard cutouts, despite being decorative, are a place where your baby’s head can get stuck. An example of this might be a heart shape or other design.

If mesh is used on the crib make sure that holes are less than 1/4 inch so that they are too small for you baby’s clothes to get stuck. Also make sure that the mesh is securely attached and that it contains no tears.

Although you may not know it, these points actually meet government requirements. Provided the crib is not too old, you will probably find that the one you are considering will meet these criteria. Once you know what to look for and what to avoid you can purchase a used crib and enjoy peace of mind.

Diaper Cakes: A Great Option for a Unique Baby Gift

without comments

Baby Shower Diaper Cakes

If you want your present to be a bit different, you might wish to consider one of the attractive baby diaper cakes or one of the other unique baby gifts out there. You could even pair it with a home-made gift certificate redeemable for several hours of your babysitting time. This thoughtfulness will really set your expression of congratulations apart from all the rest.

Baby shower diaper cakes may be the most unique and welcome gift you could give at a baby shower. Every mom needs lots of diapers so the gift will be useful and welcome. It is also very pretty. The diapers are tied up in ribbons and bows to look like a large ornate cake.

When going for diaper cakes, the choice is in your hands as either to make your own cake or have a premade one. A premade cake is definitely the easier option but if you are really interested to make your own then there are ample plans online with videos too. No doubt the premade one will have professional touch and will be as pretty as any bouquet of flowers could be.

If several of you are planning to purchase a single large present for a colleague or girlfriend, you might want to consider a so-called diaper cake. Alternatively, you could even construct one yourselves and include baby bottles in lieu of the usual birthday candles. You could even decorate it with attractively arranged baby wipes made to look like cake frosting.

You can imagine any number of unique baby gifts. New moms would specially appreciate the gift of your time to baby sit, thus giving her a chance to catch up on lost sleep. This could be a part of a bigger gift for the baby and you can put down this offer to baby sit on a card that you could enclose with the gift. Another great idea will be to get mom and baby shirts with a personalized message printed on each.

If you are looking for a unique shower gift that will stand out from the usual everyday gift basket, toys and bottles which mind you are charming but is no competition with unique baby gifts such as the exquisite baby diaper cakes, the all essential babysitting, or the ever needful assistance when it is needed.

You are sure to be a hit at your next baby shower. Baby shower diaper cakes may be the most unique and welcome gift you could give. An additional idea is having custom made baby and mom shirts printed with an individual message on each shirt.

Whether it’s a diaper cake or some other surprise, unique baby gifts will definitely make an impression. A truly considerate and distinctive present will be remembered and cherished. A helpful baby gift like diapers will be utilized and is guaranteed to delight the recipient.
